It all begins during the early hours of a beautiful spring morning driving along the Santa Cruz
Coastline. The old rusty colored Datsun exits onto a side road off Highway 1. Farmers working in
the fields hear the bark of a small dachshund toy terrier named Ginger, mixed of brown and black
in color. Inside the car, songs by Roberta Flack play on the 8-track as a mother and daughter
sing to the tunes. Outside, deer lie in the meadows basking in the warm sun, horses are running
wild in the canyon, cows are grazing, butterflies are hatching from cocoons and bee’s are making
honey. An old red schoolhouse stands approximately two miles ahead with a big green wrought
iron gate at the entrance. The car pulls up to the gate and Annabelle gets out of the car to open
the gate. She unlocks the lock and jumps onto the gate for a ride as it swings open to the other
side. Her mother drives through and Annabelle closes the gate behind the car. Straight ahead is
a bumpy dirt road. Dust is rising all around as the old Datsun cruises down the road. They
continue down the dirt road, passing over the deer crossings. The rumble beneath her feet from
the floor pad of the car lets her know she is getting closer to the family cabin. Just about then, the
car slows down and she gets out at the second gate. As she places the key in the lock,
excitement of the weekend ahead overwhelms her with emotion and she becomes giddy. Her
mother slowly passes through, but she still manages to get covered in dust. As she hurries over
the bridge to the third gate she can hear the trickling water in the creek and the birds singing in
the trees. The sound of running water is so inviting. She rushes her mother through the last gate
and she jumps back into the car for the last few hundred feet of the drive to the Logan Family
cabin.

You can hear her exclaim, “We are almost there!” as they pass the deer hunter’s cabin. Ginger
leaps from seat to seat with her own excitement, barking at the cows in the pastures as they drive
by. As the car pulls up, she swings the door open and runs down the hill to the path leading to the
creek, Ginger only just a shadow behind her. As she crosses the creek, anxiety of seeing her one
and only best friend excites her and she begins to sprint towards the big yellow house at Paige
Ranch.
