| Q&A with D.L. Carroll Q. Have you always wanted to write books? A. I enjoy creative writing and always dreamt one day of writing a book. Publishing a book fulfilled the fantasy. My first book, West Coast Lady, a women's fiction novel, was published in May of 2007. My second book, Sir Licksalot & The Maverick Fools, a children's chapter book, will be published in the Spring of 2008. I look forward to writing more. Q. What inspired you to write Sir Licksalot and the Maverick Fools?? A. My son and his friends have struggled to find a book they like for reading class, claiming they hate to read. I wanted to write a short story they could relate to, igniting their desire to read. Learning of the children's wishes to read more after the first chapter, inspired me to write an entire chapter book for their age. Q. What is Sir Licksalot & The Maverick Fools about? A. This story follows four boys on a death defying adventure as they frantically search for their siblings, and Sir Licksalot, after they mysteriously disappear from the backyard. Throughout the story the boys confront many tween issues including alienation, individualism, and friendship. Q. What inspired you to write West Coast Lady? A. It was late October 2006, and I was on the Yahoo home page navigating to read the news when I stumbled upon a challenge on the featured section. The challenge was to write a novel consisting of 50,000 words in 30 days. I had just left a stressful high tech career and thought to myself, now that would be fun. I started writing on November 1st and completed the manuscript on December 2nd. After a month of revising and editing, the manuscript was accepted on January 12, 2007 for publication. Q. What is West Coast Lady about? A. This book reveals the secrets from Annabelle’s past, stirring your emotions with her courage and passion to thrive against the odds. It is an inspiring story of shattered innocence, endless secrets, undeniable betrayal, forgiveness and the determination to pursue happiness. Q. How did you write the books? A. I like to write the end of the story first and then fill in the storyline Q. How do you pick the titles? A. I like to select titles that are symbolic to the storyline. Q. Why did you select Publish America to be the Publisher? A. Upon reviewing all the processes at the larger publishers, including first hand knowledge of another writer's experience publishing a book, I found Publish America to be the most author friendly publisher who did not require any financial or quantity commitments from me. They followed through with everything promised in my first contract and the quality of the printing is great. Therefore, I selected Publish America as my first choice of publishers for my second book too. Q. Who are your favorite authors? A. Oddly enough, I am not one to sit and read a book, unless I am being educated. Q. How did you choose an illustrator? A. Teri Cuneo is a talented artist that holds a bachelor degree in art. She teaches sketching, drawing, painting and airbrushing. Upon listening, reading and understanding my intentions and my imagination, Teri was able to draw the cave and the characters making a fantasy story imaginable. Q. How are you marketing the book? A. I am doing a lot of online marketing. I have a website, www.dlcarroll.com and I am also using the traditional tools such as bookmarks, flyers, posters, business cards, media reviews, book signings and the old fashion way, by word of mouth. Q. What other projects are you working on? A. I am currently working on two chapter books. Keep checking my website for upcoming events and future projects. |
